ROAM
It’s around 40 minutes’ drive from the hotel to the Red Dunes – a striking expanse of wind-sculpted sandscapes, backed by mountain crags. In the morning or evening, before the heat sets in, they’re a memorable spot for dune-bashing – speeding to the sandy summits in a 4x4.
SEE
If there’s an exhibition on, drop by Fenaa Alawwal, a bank-turned-cultural-centre in the Diplomatic Quarter, run by the Ministry of Culture. Along with the exhibition spaces, there’s a café, library and palm-dotted sculpture garden, whose highlights include Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s neon-bright Magic Mountains.
WANDER
Firmly geared towards families, the 60-acre Al Salam Park is a welcoming green oasis. There are multiple playgrounds where kids can let off steam, while the tranquil lake has boat rides and backlit fountains. Elsewhere, you’ll find pony rides and a mini train, along with date-palm groves and a circular avenue – perfect for shady strolls.
EAT
Just by the Diplomatic Quarter, VIA Riyadh is the city’s latest luxury playground, with its state-of-the-art cinemas, curated stores and all-star culinary line-up. Look out for offshoots of LA’s laidback, much-loved Joan’s on Third, and London’s Gymkhana, whose must-tries include an iconic biryani, and mint chutney-laced quail kebabs.
